Random Tuesday Thoughts

randomtuesday

I had a friend in high school I sat with at lunch. She used to tear open all her sandwich baggies very carefully down the seams and set her food on top of the plastic before eating any of her lunch. It was strangely fascinating to watch.

I've never figured out why people like beer. It's vile. People tell me, "You have to develop a taste for it." Ummmm... okay. Why on earth would you want to develop a taste for something that smells like horse piss?

I've started making my own oatmeal from scratch, instead of those little instant packet thingies. They're not rolled oats, either, but the honest-to-goodness steel cut oats. Takes some cooking time, but holy smokes-- I actually LIKE oatmeal now. This morning, my oatmeal was made with raisins/dates/walnuts/cinnamon/nutmeg/vanilla with bananas sliced on top. Why didn't I do this years ago? I've missed out on so many fantastic breakfasts.

In our quarterly education we have to go through here at the hospital, this little nugget of wisdom was imparted: “If it’s wet and it’s not yours, don’t touch it unless you’re wearing your protective equipment.” I really am not liking the mental images I’m getting from this…

Indeed! Don't like to think of that too much at all.

I'm with you on the "develop a taste for it" thing. I don't get it. And not just when it comes to beer. Also: coffee, capers, hazelnut, and other "acquired" tastes. Why acquire them if they're so revolting on the first try?

I agree with your list, with the exception of hazelnuts. I've loved them since the first time I ate one!

My daughter likes coffee. Ew. Nasty stuff.

Love the steel cut oats. Love not liking beer. I'm so laminating that quote in the last paragraph. Maybe I'll do one of those fancy appliques over my fireplace with that saying. It's just good sense.

I love oatmeal! And beer. So one out of two : )

I would suggest that beer is like oatmeal. If you just try the yucky stuff, it'll taste yucky :-)

Seriously, there's nothing so good as fresh oatmeal. My dad used to make me oatmeal for breakfast sometimes when I was a kid and it's a very fond memory for me. Always fresh, and cooked with love.

The government doesn't want you know know this but...beer is horse wee, dog wee and squirrel wee mixed with a shot f tequila.

All that crap about hops is just a lame marketing ploy to make it seem all scientific and environmentally sound.

I love oatmeal with buttered toast. Mm... too bad I'm facing a meal of lean cuisine.

Even my naturally contrarian nature will not want to rebel against that rule!

New follower here!!!

Stopping by from the UnMom. The sandwich baggie thing cracked me up. I used to have a friend in elementary school that did not like extra cheese on her Doritos. So, I would sit there like a puppy just waiting for her to pull one out that she just couldn't stand.

And, the beer issue ... totally agree. If you have to acquire a taste for something - perhaps you should just go with your first instinct - blech!

Hope you'll follow too!
Happy Tuesday! =)

I love oatmeal too, with sugar and milk. YUMMY!

Totally agree about the beer. Gross!

We don't like beer....we NEED beer. ;)

Happy RTT!

Interesting topics. I love to read stuff like this from others, but feel weird about writing it myself.. I am a strange one! :)

Your oatmeal sounds fantastic.

I wish I didn't have to touch anything that was wet and not mine. So much disgusting stuff comes from a toddler (even really cute ones.)

Have a great Tuesday.

I love beer. Used to hate it and only drink mixed stuff then I got into football and chips/salsa and now beer is all I drink. Yay, horse pee!

Okay, I swear I have never met anyone that agreed on my beer smelling like Piss.. wow! HELLO THERE! Thanks for stopping by and I am definitely going to try to get them to sit while they urinate!

Oh, I love steel cut oatmeal. I like to cook it up with tiny bits of apples and cinnamon. YUMMY.
Thanks for stopping by my blog.

Love the last one the mental image!
I will drink beer when we BBQ but I have to have a little salt on the can to lick -- I know crazy it might just be a Louisiana Thing!

It is ok if you don't like beer. That just leaves more for me.

Now, all you anti-beer folks out there, I must speak up in praise of beer as it helped put me through college. I worked for the state in a hop-testing lab which paid fabulous money for about 3 weeks right at the end of the summer (more than I could make the rest of summer at my other job total.) The only catch? At the end of the day I smelled like a big green hop. That smell is equivalent to a can of the skunkiest, cheapest swill beer you can find. S.P. used to say, "My dream girl...she smells like beer.."

Agree with you on the beer! Why would I want to "acquire" a taste for something?? If it isn't good the 1st time I taste it, what makes you think I want to come back for more???

That's why they hook 'em when they're young with peer pressure. They get used to it at that age and then they're done for.

LOl...great RTT! i too like the taste of beer but i also like oatmeal yours sounds yummy and healthy!

Love the RTT. And I do think beer is an acquired taste. I love the logic in your training at the hospital. My friends and I used to have a saying in our medical assisting class, "Glubby up!" As in glove up! I know I'm weird!

Mmmmmmmmmm Beer.

Mrsbear said...

I always wondered why they even made non-alcoholic beer, really who drinks it just for the taste?

That last one...that's some good advice right there. lol.

I'm going to have to try the real oatmeal, I usually take the easy route, but yours sounds much much better.

EW - that does sound gross!

I think you should post your oatmeal recipe with all those goodies included.

I like to throw in cran-raisins, too!

Banana slices? Hmmmm....hafta think on that one!

hate beer. always have. i only drank it in college because it was cheap. i mean really, how can you pass up penny beers? i could get trashed for under a dime

Keely said...

That last one sounds like very sensible advice in ANY situation.

I don't like beer either and I've TRIED to develop a taste for it. On the few times a year I drink, I usually guzzle the first two and the third isn't half bad.

My brother eats his fries first and won't bite into his sandwich until they're all gone. Weird, yes but I'd kill for a fry these days.

Vickie said...

Beer, ewe! I drank it in college because it was cheap and the only thing at parties. But now, I go for the umbrella drinks.

I tried the oatmeal in the packages and I thought it was mushy. I am gonna try the steel cut oats. Oprah also says it is the best. Maybe I am missing out on something.

Beer = Yuck.

Oatmeal = YUM! Especially the way you make it!!

My son loves plain oatmeal. He's kinda gross.

I'm so with you on the beer thing ... why do I need to develop a taste for something that is just repulsive? Do I need to develop a taste for spinach? raw fish? Just leave me alone, please.

And I think that "If its wet and its not yours, don't touch it." would suffice in everyone's lives.

Thanks for visiting! I enjoyed my visit here!

I am totally with you on all your randomness...and now you've convinced me I really need to step away from the instant oatmeal and make it right...my aunt's been trying to explain it to me, so I guess between the two of you I should listen! ;)

Happy RTT a day late! :)

Your description of beer cracked me up! I've never been able to eat oatmeal, though I've tried because it's supposed to be so good for you-I'll have to try the steel-cut kind! "Wet and not yours"?=good advice!

Re the beer? I saw a horse pissing like, well, a horse, just today. Now I can't get the imagine of a horse pissing into a beer stein out of my head. Er, thanks?! ;)

I love the thought on beer, it hasn't ever appealed to me to try and get used to it....if I don't like it, I don't want to like it!

Totally agree about beer. Ick! I may have to try the real deal oatmeal. I want to like oatmeal, but I just don't. I've never had steel cut, though.
I work in a hospital too, and that nugget made me flinch. (so does the word nugget, come to think of it...)
