Pea Green Soup

My children love to ask the eternal question, "What's for dinner?" It is followed by a close second, "What's for lunch?" and a distant third, "What's for breakfast?" I'm sure I drove my own mom nutso with these same three questions.

One day many years ago, as I was thinking of what to cook, Shandy asked me, "Mom, what's for dinner?" I off-handedly answered, "Pea Green Soup." This has now become my standard answer to any "What's for (meal)?" questions that head my way.

Now, you're probably wondering where I came up with this retort. (For those of you who have spent many hours on a school playground, you know where I'm headed...) It's from a joke that has been around for years and years and years. It goes like this:

Person 1: Say the words, "Pea Green Soup" after everything I say.
Person 1: What did you have for breakfast?
Person 2: Pea Green Soup.
Person 1: What did you have for lunch?
Person 2: Pea Green Soup.
Person 1: What did you have for dinner?
Person 2: Pea Green Soup.
Person 1: What did you do all night?
Person 2: Pea Green Soup.

One time I really did make split pea and ham soup for dinner. It was rather hilarious trying to convince them that we were REALLY having Pea Green Soup for dinner. :)

I knew I had taught my children well when I came home one day, and asked them, "What should I make for dinner?"

"Pea Green Soup," they answered.

I love jokes like that. "Pea Green Soup." I'll have to remember it.

It's a damn sight better than the reply I used to get from my dad when I'd ask what's for dinner.
"Shit with egg on" would be his reply, which basically meant 'nothing'!

Suldog, glad you like it. It's an old favorite. (Obviously, since I remembered it from childhood!)

And Tara-- you have to tell this one at the dinner table to your family. :)

Ewww... I've heard that response before, and I dislike as much as you do, it seems!

When my son younger, he'd always ask "Where are you going?" to anyone who had the gaul to leave him. My little brother used to reply "Canada." Every. Single. Time.

About a year ago, my bro called the house and asked for my son. He HAD to talk to my son!

My bro was on the Canadian side of Niagra Falls.

He was in Canada.

Turns out he was really planning on going to Canada after all.

Love it!

One answer I picked up from my mom, and use regularly, is to the same question: "Where are you/we going?"

To which the pat answer was:

"Crazy."

My kids hate that answer as much as I did when I was young!

lol!

UNBELIEVABLY, I never heard this on the playground. Now I have a new one to teach my children. We homeschoolers have to work hard to make sure our children are properly socialized, donchaknow!

Jen, be sure to come back tomorrow for an encore. ;)

That's too cute. I'll have to share it with Greg's nieces and nephews. They'll love it.
