SOLUTION: Red X in Outlook Where Pictures Ought To Be

Problem:
  • You haven't changed any settings in your Outlook, and for some unknown reason instead of pictures, you have red x's.
  • You've tried every single fix you could find on Google, including the Trust Center, deleting Outlook temp files, picture placeholders, etc. etc. etc. Nothing works.
  • You use a proxy server to access the internet.
Solution:
  • Close Outlook.
  • Open Notepad. Copy the following into a new text document:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common]
"AllowImageProxyAuth"=dword:00000002

  • Click on File --> Save As
  • File name: Outlook_Fix.reg
  • Save as type: Change to "All Files"
  • Click Save.
  • Navigate to where you saved Outlook_Fix.reg
  • Double-click on the file.
  • Choose "Yes" when the dialog box comes up.
Re-open Outlook. When you next attempt to view an email with pictures, it will prompt you for your proxy credentials. It should work normally after that.

SOLUTION: Facebook Mobile "Sorry, an error has occurred."

Problem:
  • You attempt to send a status update to "32665" (Facebook) from your cell phone
  • An error message is returned that states, "Sorry, an error has occurred."
Solution:

Change how you send status updates to Facebook.
  • Click on "Account" in the top right-hand corner of the Facebook main screen
  • Choose "Account Settings"
  • Click on the "Mobile" tab
  • Click on the "Go to Facebook Mobile" link near the top of the page
  • Find the "Upload via Email" section.
  • Your "Personal Email" will be highlighted.
  • Send status updates to this email instead of 32665.
Note: You do not need to have internet access on your phone for this to work. Just send a text to the email address, and it will go through fine.

    SOLUTION: Noreply-Comment@blogger.com

When I got my lovely Blackberry a number of months ago, I started to respond directly to comments via email, instead of in my blog comments. Recently, it has come to my attention that lots of my replies have gone to a comment response stealer, noreply-comment@blogger.com.

If you would like people to be able to email you back after you leave a comment, here's how you change those settings. Well, at least in Blogger. Those of you with WordPress and other non-Googly blogs will have to figure out things on your own. :)
    1. Click on the Customize link in the upper right hand corner of your screen.
    2. Click on the Dashboard link in the upper right hand corner of your screen.
    3. Click on Edit Profile, which is on the left hand side of the screen next to your picture.
    4. This will take you to the Edit User Profile screen.
    5. Look in the Privacy section.
    6. Check the box that says, "Show my email address".
    7. In the Identity section, enter in an email address. (Paranoid users: create a new email address for this, if you want.)
    8. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click on Save Profile.
And there you have it. Interactive comments!

So if you think I've totally been ignoring your comments lately, it's not true... we'll just have to go after that no-good comment stealer noreply-comment@blogger.com. Hrumph.

SOLUTION: Can't Open Attachments in Outlook 2003

    Problem:
    • You have Office/Outlook 2003
    • You have installed the Office 2007 Compatibility pack
    • When you double-click on Office 2007 attachments in Outlook, you receive an error that says, "The system cannot find the file specified"
    Solution:
    • Open Windows Explorer/My Computer
    • Go to Tools, then Folder Options
    • Click on the File Types tab
    • Scroll down to the file type you are having issues with (ex: .xlsx or .docx)
    • Click Change
    • Choose the regular program to open the attachment-- in other words, you want Excel to open a .xlsx, or Word to open .docx, etc. DO NOT CHOOSE THE COMPATIBILITY PACK PROGRAM.
    • Click OK
Now try to open your attachment again. It should (hopefully) work this time!
